So what the flip is Sofa Boy Records?

Four years ago we found ourselves at a crossroads, we'd decided to leave our lovely label of 8 years - Big Scary Monsters - and go our own way. It wasn't a decision we made lightly. In fact, at the time, it felt like a potentially devastating move but we knew in the back of our minds we needed to go independent in order to grow.

So, in 2021 we started our own label Sofa Boy Records and self-released our third album, Spring Island. We also started working closely with our friends Real Terms (UK) and recently Inventory (DK), two bands we are very excited about and very keen to push as much as we can.

But why leave a label you love? The challenge was to transition the band from hobby to career. Up until that point, we hadn't taken any sort of income from the band per se, but we could sustain ourselves when we tour. If we put money the band generated into our band fund instead of our own pockets, it meant we could afford to record and release the next record and keep all of any profit made going forward.

Without the financial backing of a label it's a pretty daunting prospect but the long term result is you have complete control of your finances and in turn you gain control of your future. The music industry is a minefield at times these days and there is 100% a need for decent labels and the fantastic people out there running them, helping bands find their feet.

Our story with BSM isn’t over either. Kev co-manages us and Josie tours with us as our merch person, which just goes to show there are many ways to work with a network of friends, all pulling in the same direction, beyond the confines of the old music industry. It’s a similar story internationally where we partner with great people like Wax Bodega (US), To lose La Track (IT) and Like A Fool (JP) to help us continue touring the world and get our records out to you all.

Our main goal for Sofa Boy is to release music we love and grow into a community of like minded music lovers. Where artists can grow and retain control of their own music while helping and supporting each other.
